I love that with a little bit of elbow grease an old piece of furniture can be completely transformed. Taking off layers of what was and refinishing them with what is now is really satisfying to me. It always reminds me of that Girl Scouts song we used to sing which was decades ago but rings true.
“Make new friends, but keep the old.
One is silver, the other is gold.
A circle is round, it has no end.
That’s how long, I will be your friend.”
– Girl Scout Make New Friends Lyrics
I will say we definitely started a theme with our furniture refinishing projects when we stained and painted my Grandpa’s buffet. It became our stain & paint furniture project go-to. We used it as our template for most of our furniture projects moving forward.
The best way to understand our love for this project is that we currently have three pieces of furniture in the house that have been redone the exact same way. The painted white base and the kona-stained top really work with all of our color schemes.
Our Other Completed Stain & Paint Furniture Projects
All furniture projects start at my favorite place, the antique malls. I just feel surrounded by nostalgia when I go. Especially when it is around the holidays and all the decorations are gleaming in the booths.
It was funny because we found it in this cubby that had most all the furniture painted white except for this little cabinet which was painted green. I think the surrounding white pieces helped us see past the green with antique glaze coloring to see the true treasure it could become. It was the exact size we were looking for. We wanted something smaller. But we still wanted it to have a couple of shelves.
I have been scouring through my photos to find a picture of this green beauty but sadly can not find one. I can tell you it was definitely not our taste but we didn’t buy it for its current state. It’s kind of weird to think that you go out looking for a piece of furniture that you are going to have to alter to work for your needs. But that is the fun of the whole thing I suppose.

Stripping, Sanding, Staining & Painting Once Again
Our Standard Stain & Paint Furniture Refinishing Project Process.
In usual fashion, we brought the piece home and Kevin went to work stripping the piece right away. The nice thing about the cabinet was it was smaller with lots of glass so there wasn’t as much to strip.
After stripping the top and sanding everything down we stained the top with Rust-Oleum Kona Wood Stain. As well as finished the stain with polyurethane just like the other pieces. After two coats of the stain, we taped the bottom part and painted the bottom portion with white furniture paint.
Adding The Finishing Touches To Our Finished Stain & Paint Furniture Project
I really wasn’t a fan of the ornate nobs that came on the cabinet. They really didn’t go with my vision for the piece! So off to Lowe’s, we went to find a replacement for the two nobs on the front of the glass cabinet doors.
I love that when doing these projects we can transform the furniture to function in the manner in which we need it. So with the cabinet, we removed the light that was previously in the top and used the remaining hole for our cable cords. Which worked perfectly since we were using the cabinet for our cable box/game systems.
I was so ready to bring it in and enjoy it in our basement. My patience for the process of the project sometimes gets the best of me. Especially when Kevin has “little” touch-ups here and there. Which sometimes I feel are just little nuances to annoy me! I like to picture it completed and in the place where we purchased it.
It’s nice to have pieces throughout the house that we created for ourselves in a sense. These days we have it in our hallway upstairs and love it even more. Especially since now, we see it every day!

It really is amazing what a little sandpaper, paint stripper, and furniture paint can do to a piece of furniture. Looking at the “newly” detailed piece of furniture always amazes me. This color scheme of white painted bottom and kona-stained top is our favorite look right now. Pretty much every piece we have done minus the boy’s dressers has this look and I love it! I love the idea of taking something old and making it new again. There is some nostalgia associated with the whole process!
