The boy’s blue dresser project was right up our alley. Something that Kevin and I like to do is find old pieces of furniture and refinish them. When I say old I mean sturdy, all wood, with lots of character pieces.
The kind that they don’t seem to make anymore. It seems like now a day everything is particle board and comes in five hundred pieces.
On The Hunt
So when we were preparing the boy’s rooms we went out both times to antique shops on the hunt for dressers we could refinish.
They were definitely not our first furniture projects so we knew at this point what we were doing.
Grayson’s Blue Dresser Project
For Grayson’s dresser, we found it at an antique store in Medina, OH while visiting my dad. It was similar to the dressers that we had in our bedroom. Which we had already stripped and stained.
From our previous project, we knew that it would not fun stripping the current paint off before repainting it since our pieced had the same paint as well.
Once we stripped the dress and sanded it down we were ready to paint. I chose a darker blue color. It actually turned out lighter than I thought but we really liked it in the end. We finished the dresser with new liners and drawer pulls.

The Before & After
Grayson’s Blue Dresser Project
Next Up Mason’s Blue Dresser Project
This proved to be harder than the first.
When we were getting ready for Mason to arrive and started looking for his dresser we had the hardest time finding what we were looking for.
We looked at our usual antique places and even drove all over to new places with no luck.
So we turned to good old Craigslist to see what they had to offer. Low and behold we found what we were looking for.
So Kevin went out on his Craigslist adventure to pick up the dresser. When he got it home we inspected the piece.
You could definitely tell that there was some water damage to one side of the dresser. Minor nicks and scratches but all things we could repair.
Bigger Project Than Expected
You never know what you are really dealing with until you start.
The process began a little different than Grayson’s. Kevin had to replace a side panel since there was some water damage.
While he was doing that he had to strip everything down and clean every square inch. After completing all the repair work and cleaning the piece Kevin sanded everything.
Though to this day, Kevin still says that he can occasionally smell a slight odor to the dresser. I think he was just out there working on it enough that his mind thinks that the smell is there.
I can’t smell anything on the dresser and trust me if there was an odor I would smell it. We sprayed it with essential oils, vinegar, placed baking soda in the drawers, left it outside, left unstoppable in the drawers, and so on.
After treating the wood with pretty much everything you can imagine, it was time to paint. We decided to paint Mason’s dresser the same dark blue that we painted Grayson’s dresser.
Since we already knew we liked the color and it worked with his room as well, dark blue it was! We again finished the dresser off with new liners and drawer pulls.

Finishing Touches
I’m sure there will be many “touch-ups” along the way!
I think that both of the dressers turned out really well. We painted both dressers the same dark blue and replaced both sets of drawer pulls with new brushed nickel ones. The drawer pulls are different for each dresser but still very similar.
Hopefully, the dressers last us awhile. Other than I imagine they will need some paint touch-ups at some point. Being all wood they should be sturdy enough to last two rambunctious boys!
