This is one of my favorite furniture refinish projects we have completed thus far. I inherited my grandfather’s buffet when he passed away. He held a special place in my heart and I will always miss him. Having something that was his is such a wonderful memory of him. It is something that I can remember him by every time I see it! We decided that since my Grandpa’s buffet wasn’t exactly our taste in color. As well as the fact that we really didn’t have a need for a buffet either. So we decided to repurpose it to be a farmhouse TV stand.

How The Buffet Came To Be
When my Grandpa died back in 2013 my Mom’s sister was getting rid of all of his furniture and selling his house. At the time my Dad decided to take some of the furniture and store it.
Some of the pieces that he took I then inherited or you could say my dad “talked” Kevin into taking them. He is still working on getting him to take the dining room table.
I think my Dad will be storing that in his basement for a while longer. He hasn’t sold Kevin on that one yet!
Let The Transformation Begin
Goodbye Buffet, Hello Farmhouse TV Stand!
So my Dad hauled over the buffet with a couple of other things he had for us. We placed it in our garage at the time, where all projects on the verge of greatness started.
We were trying to decide what we exactly wanted to do with the buffet. Because we knew we definitely did not need a buffet nor did we have room for one in our current house.
At the time we were in desperate need of a new entertainment center and thought we could make the buffet work for that.
Looking For Inspiration For Our New Farmhouse TV Stand
Pinterest It Is!
I went to my favorite place for some inspiration, Pinterest. With furniture and house project ideas it’s a wonderful oasis of ideas.
Recipes on the other hand can be hit or miss. Just ask Kevin about the avocado mac ‘n cheese. If you don’t try you will never know, right?
Time To Strip
How most all of our furniture projects begin.
We started by stripping the current cherry stain on the top of the piece that we intended to retain.
It came off much easier than the paint we had stripped off of our last project which was a welcome change.
We have had really good luck using Citristrip which we normally get at Lowe’s.
Rubber cleaning gloves on we applied the coats of Citristip and let it sit.
There is something satisfying about seeing how the finish just comes right off. We finished scraping all of the finish off and let the pieces dry.
Once it was completely dry we sanded the entire buffet and all the drawers. Along with I’m sure other things that Kevin did before we were ready to paint and stain!
Time To Reimagine The Buffet
Buffet Today, Farmhouse TV Stand Tomorrow!
We decided that we wanted to leave the doors off of each side of the buffet and have them be open shelves instead.
As well as the top row of drawers so we could put our cable boxes and Kevin’s game systems there.
We covered the top shelves with a thin piece of wood to add reinforcement and make them a little more finished-looking since they would be left open without drawers.
Lastly, Kevin cut a hole in the back of the top center drawer so that we could thread the cable wires and gaming system wires through.
This was somewhat easy since we replaced the whole backer of the piece. Kevin was able to measure and cut the hole without the backer being attached.
Painting The Redesigned Farmhouse TV Stand Is Next
Next, we started the painting process of the bottom part and drawers. Starting with a primer followed by two coats of white furniture paint.
Though there were lots of crevasses and grooves this process seemed to take no time at all. Probably because compared to the first furniture refinishing projects we did anything would feel smoother and quicker in comparison.
Time To Start Staining The Top
Our next plan of action was to stain the top of the buffet with our go-to favorite stain color Rust-Oleum Kona Wood Stain.
To begin the staining process Kevin tapped around the top piece so that we wouldn’t get any stain on the freshly painted white bottom portion.
Then we started staining. After looking at the pictures I couldn’t believe that I let Kevin stain the furniture in the house. The smell alone I can imagine incited many complaints from me but who knows?
After two coats of stain and a finishing polyurethane coat, we were done with the top. We took the green tape off and put all the pieces back together.

Finishing Touches On Our New Farmhouse TV Stand
Finally, It Was Ready To Use! Bye, Bye, Walmart Entertainment “bench” and Hello New Repurposed and Refinished Buffet Turned Farmhouse TV Stand!
Once we completed the hard parts of staining and painting we put in new drawer lines. I picked out new drawer pulls for the three drawers from Lowes.
I decided on the cupped bronze pulls which seemed sturdy enough for the weight of the drawers. The project turned out better than we imagined. It really looked like the farmhouse TV stand that I had imagined when we began this project.
The Finished Project
Our Completed Farmhouse TV Stand
This was definitely before we had children because I was able to have trinkets on the shelves without fear of someone breaking or eating them! Now a day the shelves house bins of toys and unbreakable!
It is a really special piece for me because it was my Grandpa’s. I love that we made it into something we could use every day and remember him! It’s something that we will have for a long time to come and I will always treasure.
