I absolutely miss lots of the finishes that we completed in our old house, especially our living room makeover. I know that in time we will recreate those here as well, of course in their own fashion. But just looking at the pictures makes me want to start working on them now.
We completely redid all of the aspects of our old living room. From the wall color, outlets, flooring, trim, doors, you name it we upgraded it!
What the living room looked like when Kevin bought the house.
My Introduction To The Living Room
It’s amazing how first impressions do resonate in your memory.
Thinking back to the first time I saw the living room I am truly amazed at what became of it. When Kevin and I were dating the only thing that he had in the living room at the time was a cat tree. That’s it! Okay and maybe some vertical blinds that he had installed. If you count that, which obviously I don’t!
He had already taken off all of the trim and casing throughout the room so it was bare-boned in those terms. It was definitely a blank canvas of sorts. He had painted the room a goldish color when he moved in. Covering up the plain beige color that was initially in there when he bought the house.

Starting The Living Room Makeover Project
This was definitely a Project and a Process.
So as time went on and I eventually moved in and we eventually got married and yadda yadda yadda, the living room evolved right along with our relationship. We replaced the front door as one of our first projects in the room. Which was definitely a 100% necessity type of project.

After completing the front door we started on the flooring. There was a square of vinyl oak planks by the front door, that was already peeling off and desperately needed replacing, and transitioned to a terribly worn blue carpet.
Deciding On The Flooring Design For The Living Room Makeover
It was definitely something we spent some time debating or more or else trying to get the other to agree to our own personal preferences!
Kevin really wanted to have some type of tile in this area and then transition to the laminate hardwood floors. I wasn’t too sold on the two different flooring types in the room idea. I of course had other ideas for our living room makeover flooring choices.
But he eventually got me to agree with my stipulation that the tile area is rounded not square, as it initially was. Give and take right?
Picking Out The Tile For The Living Room Makeover
Oh, the number of tile choices there are to choose from.
We went to Lowe’s looking for a tile that we wanted to use. We decided on a light tan tile with a slight grain to it. Though it made it a little more challenging because of my rounded request Kevin made it work and it came out really nice.
He was able to do his “special” cuts with the tile saw we bought. Which of course was a necessary purchase because a new project means a new tool is an absolute must. He tells me the same thing about my kitchen “tools”! 😃 I suppose whatever gets the living room makeover completed faster I am game!
Picking Out The Rest Of The Flooring For Our Living Room Makeover
This was a little more fun in a sense because this flooring is what covered most of the room and made the most difference.
Once we had the tiles installed and set we decided on what color flooring we wanted for the rest of the room. We decided on an espresso-colored laminate flooring from Sam’s Club. It was thick quality laminate and very affordable.
Bye, Bye, Carpet & Hello, Lamanite Wood Flooring!
I could not wait to see the blue carpet go. It was one of the steps in the living room makeover project that I was most excited about!
Once the tile area was done we moved on replacing the carpeted section. Since we had already picked out our new espresso-colored laminate wood flooring it was time to pull up the carpet and prep the floor for installation.
I am pretty sure that the carpet was original to the house. If not, then it was pretty close to it. There was so much dust and dirt under the carpet pad it was disgusting. Just thinking about how long it had been under there and whose dirt it was somewhat grossed me out.
I guess you don’t really realize how much dirt and grime actually get into your carpet and carpet pad throughout the years. I was so happy to get rid of the dirt, dust, and blue carpet altogether.
Once we had the carpet out and cleaned the floor we were ready for the vapor barrier. Once that was in place we started installing the new flooring. The vapor barrier was the easy part of the process. However, the laminate was definitely easier and quicker than the tile.
Installing The Rest Of The Flooring
The last pieces of the floor puzzle in our living room makeover project.
Kevin started on one side of the room in the corner and worked his way over. Measuring and cutting the pieces along the way. I’m sure he would say the hardest part was cutting the pieces around my circular tile design.
After the flooring was in we framed out the picture window and finished adding the door casing. Along with the baseboard. We hadn’t had it on there for seriously years and it felt like a palace to us after it was back on.
Adding A New Project In Our Living Room Makeover –
Changing The Paint Color
This Definitely Took Some Persuading.
Since Kevin had painted the living room when he moved into the house he wasn’t all that thrilled about my idea of painting again a different color. But as I showed him ideas and worked on him he finally came around to the idea.
So we went to Lowe’s with a vision in my mind, a place where Kevin says he is glad he doesn’t live! We found a light gray with a blue hue that we both ended up really liking. Once everything was taped we painted the walls in the living room. As well as up the stairs and the hallway upstairs.

Finally At The Time In The Living Room Makeover Project To Start Putting Everything Back Together
I was so excited to see the completed living room makeover project! And let’s be honest, I was also excited to see what new things I could get for the room! Because a new room makeover means new room decor, right?
Once the painting was done we put all the furniture back. Since we got rid of all the carpet we had to get some type of rug to put in the room. We found a cream-colored rug we really liked from Lowe’s. This was definitely a pre-children purchase choice.

It was fall when we finished and Christmas was right around the corner. I could not wait to decorate our new living room for Christmas.
It felt like a completely new room which made it feel like I was decorating it for the first time. We had also recently finished our entertainment center project which went really well in the completed room.

It’s so funny to see how our Christmas trees, decorations, and rooms evolved throughout the years.
A New Living Room Makeover To Do
With lots of inspiration from this living room makeover, of course.
I will say I really do miss the living room because of all the hard work we put into it and how nice it turned out. We have already started working on our living room in the new house.
We started with the entryway which was our first step in the project because it connects directly to the living room.
Completing the living room at this house will definitely take a little more time this go around. We didn’t have children when we did this project and now we have two boys! More enjoyment and less work!
