Pumpkin Carving
Trick-or-Treat
It’s finally pumpkin carving time. Though, Grayson eventually moved on from asking about it partially because the pumpkins were on the front porch. So out of sight, out of mind was quite helpful for this.

Pumpkin Carving Day
Another fun Fall activity to do!
The Thursday before Halloween was the perfect day to carve pumpkins. It was dreary and cold out, which meant we needed some type of activity to entertain the boys. We figured what better activity than pumpkin carving to give some excitement to the day.

Finding A Place To Carve
Because you needed a decent amount of space to carve and space to play.
We decided to set up everything in the garage for easy cleanup. That and it gave Kevin an excuse to clean the garage so that we could park the cars inside. It is getting to be that time of year where he likes to have both the cars in the garage instead of in the driveway all the time.
Setting The Carving Stage
Finding the easiest. place and set up for the inevitable pumpkin clean up.
Once everything was clear and ready, we brought out the boys and the pumpkins. Sweet little Mason sat in his stroller because containment is still key for Mason’s adventurous self at the moment. Grayson was super excited to get started carving.
The boys both seemed excited to participate. Grayson kept running around touching the pumpkins and laughing while he waited for Daddy to start the carving fun.
Pumpkin Carving Design Dilemma
This really wasn’t a dilemma because Grayson knew exactly what he wanted, and Mason can’t make requests yet. So Grayson was the director of carving this year.
Once we had the pumpkins, carving utensils, and a bowl for the pumpkin seeds, it was time to decide on our designs. This was quite an easy decision for Grayson. He requested a kitty-kitty. This is quite fitting with his obsession with the big kitty-kitty blow-ups that he loves to see.
The boys both watched diligently as Kevin went to work, sketching his kitty on the pumpkin with a sharpie. He is definitely the more artistic one when it comes to drawing.

Carving The Little Pumpkin
My opportunity to carve.
I decided that I would carve the littler pumpkin with a standard pumpkin face. Well, intentions are one thing, and reality doesn’t always mimic intentions. I started carving the pumpkin, and it was looking quite nice until I started on the mouth.
I ended up getting too close to his nose, and the mouth and nose became one. So trying to decide how to salvage my botched carving, we decided to make it into a dog!
Finishing The Pumpkins
Or you could say just waiting for Kevin to finish the kitty.
When we were finally done, the boys were ready to move on to something else. Well, Grayson was into everything else that was in the garage.
It was around getting to be lunchtime too, so we quickly found some candles. We shut the garage door and lit the candles to see our finished carved pumpkins. The kitty pumpkin definitely turned out better than my “dog” pumpkin.

Trick-or-Treat
With pumpkin carving done, it was time to decide what we were going to do regarding trick-or-treating. We knew that Grayson would absolutely love to see all the people on Halloween, but we felt like he didn’t really need to go trick-or-treating himself. Being only 3 makes it somewhat easier to pass on certain things without him realizing that he is missing out on anything.
Preparing For Trick-Or-Treaters
Since these are different times, we had to come up with a different method to hand out candy.
We decided to bag a couple of pieces of candy in a little plastic bag so that kids could pick up their own candy.
Grayson actually helped a little with assembling the little candy bags though he eventually realized it was more fun to open and taste the candy than stuff it into the bags.
Mason had no idea what we were doing but watched from his highchair while we stuff little baggie after little baggie.
After finishing the candy bags, we went to Kevin’s office to borrow a plastic table to put at the end of the driveway to hold all of our candy. Our self-service type of trick-or-treating.

Trick – Or – Treating
Coronavirus Style
After finishing dinner, we set out all of our candy bags and lit our pumpkins. Kevin brought out all of our outdoor folding chairs and the space heater. We set up in the driveway watching while all the trick-or-treaters came through with their cute and unique costumes.
I was actually pretty surprised how many people came out to trick-or-treat. Grayson absolutely loved seeing all the people walk by and take their candy bags.
He wore his baby shark costume from last year and spent most of the time dancing. Which really is more like spinning in circles in the driveway.
Mason also enjoyed the people watching as he sat in his stroller close to the space heater. I’m not sure he understood what he was seeing, but he definitely seemed entertained by all the kids.
Though different from normal, we definitely enjoyed trick-or-treating and the semblance of normal life that is provided. I know that in years to come, the boys will both enjoy and look forward to trick-or-treating!
