Grayson’s Nursery Makeover – New House New Room

August 18, 2020

Grayson’s Nursery Makeover

Grayson was four months old when we moved into our new house. Which meant that we had literally just finished his nursery at our old house before moving. So this felt like a nursery makeover take two.

And of course, two little girls lived in our new house before us. The cute little purple room was Grayson’s new bedroom until we transformed it into a sweet baby boy blue.

Which meant we had to start all over again. Honestly, we would have done this anyway because we would have wanted to make it our own regardless of what the room looked like.

Starting Our First Project – Grayson’s Nursery Makeover From Purple To Blue

Of course, the first project done was Grayson’s room! Oh, the things you will do for your children.

So we started the first project, changing Grayson’s bedroom from a little girl’s purple room to a little boy’s blue. Since we were starting over essentially we wanted to do something similar to the room we just finished but also a little different. New house, new room, was our thought process.

So off to Lowe’s our favorite home improvement store we went. I will say the fact that there are both Lowe’s and Home Depot within 10 minutes of our house was a contending factor for Kevin.

The Never-Ending Project

Depending on Who You Ask.

This project took about a month to complete. I thought it felt like forever personally. I’m sure Kevin would disagree. It was Kevin’s busy season, we had just moved and of course, he had just started a new job.

To-Do List For The Nursery:

Change the wall color – Because purple was obviously not going to work.

Remove the light rail – Though unique didn’t go with our plan.

Replace the ceiling fan – Because we needed something a little bigger and with more light.

Starting From The Top Of The Purple Room On The Way To Blue

You don’t always start from the bottom and work your way up. At least not for this project!

So we started the room by removing the light rail. Taking the trim off that was encasing the lighting was the easy part of this process.

They had used a string of tube lighting which was quite unique but not something we really liked for design.

The tube lighting we realized had been hardwired to the outlet. Which made removing it more time-consuming and a little more complicated than initially anticipated.

Patch It Up Purple

Though the holes will probably return once the rambunctious boys are let loose in the room!

After all of the trim and lighting were removed there was a decent amount of holes. This meant that there was lots of patching and drywall repair that needed to be done before we could paint. This was somewhat time-consuming as well.

While all this work was being done poor Grayson was living out of the guest bedroom. From one girly room to the next! We all had to make sacrifices!

New Ceiling Fan

While the walls were being patched we proceeded with replacing the ceiling fan. I will say that Grayson’s ceiling fan was much easier to replace than Mason’s. Kevin didn’t have to go into the attic for this one so that was much nicer.

While installing the fan Kevin realized that the ceiling had never been painted. So we of course had to “resolve” the issue and paint it before moving on!

Time To Paint The Nursery Blue At Last

Then we were finally ready to paint. Since we had just finished Grayson’s room in the old house we decided we didn’t want to replicate it completely so we started over with color choices.

We painted three walls a lighter blue color and then made an accent wall. The accent wall was white and dark blue stripes. This was very similar to his first room but definitely had its own twist with the two different blue colors!

We started the accent wall by painting the whole wall white and then once it was dry and ready we taped off the six stripes. It took a couple of coats to get the blue color we wanted.

Nursery Makeover Complete!

Once the painting was done and all the tape was off we were ready to put everything back in the room and decorate.

We didn’t really have to buy anything new for his room except for curtains and a curtain rod. We had everything else already from his old room.

Since we had just finished his room before we moved we had this constant deja vu feeling. However, there were differences in the paint this time around and obviously the room in general.

It was just like, “Hello, didn’t we just do this”!

So once everything was done we moved all of his furniture from the guest bedroom back into his room. We then hung all of his pictures and put all of his toys back. He was all ready to move into his newly completed room, for the second time!

Nursery Makeover: Two Years Later

The nursery walls are still standing with a couple of scuffs and scratches. I say it goes to show the room has been loved well!

Now that he has been in there for about two years I will say we have had to do some touch-ups on the walls and small things like that. Which I have to say is somewhat expected with a toddler, especially a little boy.

I keep telling Kevin it’s just the beginning of wear and tear. Reminding him of all the times he put nicks in his walls growing up. Life comes full circle!

I have done multiple furniture rearrangements, which is something I just can’t help myself. We are still very happy with how the room turned out and love watching Grayson grow and play in his new room!
