Sauce Sandwich Recipe – Mary Kay’s Secret Simple Meal

September 25, 2020

Tonight as we were mauling over what we wanted to eat for dinner. We decided on our go-to favorite quick and simple meal, Sauce Sandwich. While I was making them I decided why not share our versatile, favorite, “I can’t decide what to eat” meal.

This is one of my husband’s favorite meals from his childhood. He loves to talk about how his mom, Mary Kay, used to make him the best Sauce Sandwich.

So my introduction to Mary Kay’s Sauce Sandwich invoked my own childhood memories. These were what I remember from my childhood to be an English Muffin Pizza. But you know what they say “tomato, tomato”, Sauce Sandwich’s it is.

Anything pizza is delicious in my opinion and let’s be honest a sandwich made to be a pizza is an extra bonus at that!

These are definitely an easy little meal for those days that we are busy or if we can’t really decide on what we want to eat. We have had these for both lunch and dinner. They are a nostalgic favorite, especially for Kevin!

Sauce Sandwich Ingredients

Ingredients:

The best part is how you can make these out of whatever you have in your fridge and cupboard!

Bread

You can use literally any bread you have on hand.
Some types that I have used are:

White, Wheat, or Any Sliced Bread
(Which is what the “original” sandwich was made with.)
English Muffins
Hamburger Buns
Biscuits
Sandwich Rolls
Dinner Rolls

Really the options are endless and anything you have on hand would work!

Sauce

I normally use one of the following:

Prego No Sugar Added Pasta Sauce
Prego Pizza Sauce
Bertolli Pasta Sauce

But really whatever your favorite tomato sauce is would work with these sandwiches.

Cheese

I normally use Mozzarella cheese when I make these. But there have been those times when I haven’t had mozzarella on hand and have used Cheddar or Colby Jack. It has been good with any cheese I have tried.

I also normally like to sprinkle parmesan cheese on the sandwiches as well! This is more of my addition and not something Kevin initially said his Mom would do.

Toppings

You could top the Sauce Sandwiches with whatever you like. We normally just put Pepperoni on them but you could put whatever you like as a pizza topping on them as well.

I have also made them with no toppings and they were just as good. I suppose it just depends on the mood you are in and what you have on hand at the time!

Instructions:

There really is no right or wrong way to make a Sauce Sandwich!

Start by preheating the oven to 350º.

You don’t have to but for easy cleanup, I like to either line my baking sheet with parchment paper or Reynolds wrap. Whichever I have on hand at the time.

Step One:

Bread, Rolls, Biscuits, or Buns!

This time around I used yeast dinner rolls that I got from Kroger the Bakery.

So I started by slicing each of them and placing them on the prepped baking sheet.

Step Two:

Sauce Is Next!

Next, I top each of the sliced dinner rolls with Prego No Sugar Added Pasta Sauce.

Use whatever sauce you like or have on hand.

You can add as much or as little sauce as you like.

We are more on the side of a little bit goes a long way but to each his own!

Step Three:

Cheese, Please!

Next, this is optional of course, but I like to sprinkle parmesan cheese on top of the sauce.

Then I add heaps of Mozzarella cheese onto each roll. Again, whatever amount you like works!

For this, we are definitely on the opposite side of our sauce position because the more cheese the better!

I follow this up by sprinkling a little bit more parmesan cheese on top of the mozzarella.

Sometimes this is all I do for sauce sandwiches. I don’t top them anything other than just cheese. I will just pop them in the oven like this.

Step Four:

To Top Or Not To Top? Which normally depends on what I have in the fridge at the time.

The last part of the sandwich assembly is adding the toppings. We like to have Pepperoni on ours.

You really could use whatever topping you like such as veggies, meats, and the like.

Step Five:

Baking Time!

Once all of the toppings are added I put them in the oven for about 10 mins or until the cheese is melted to my liking.

Cook time also depends on how much cheese I used and how big the bread is that I use but 10 minutes is a good starting place for checking for doneness!

Step Six:

Ready to enjoy!

Lastly once the cheese is melted and done it is time to enjoy a Sauce Sandwich!

This is definitely an easy meal that can be customized to many different preferences.

It is definitely a favorite that we will continue to enjoy and I’m sure our boys will enjoy it as well!

  2. Line a baking sheet with partchment paper or aluminum foil.

  3. Lay out bread of your choice on the baking sheet.

  4. Top each piece with the tomato sauce of your chosing.

  5. Add the cheese to each piece next. I normally add more than nessecary but whatever you like would work.

  6. Finish up by adding all of the topping to each piece. You could make each one a different collection of toppings or top them all the same.
