A fun little project that we did at our old house was to stencil an accent wall in our guest bedroom.
Looking back at the pictures I guess I didn’t realize that we completed this project before the doors and trim.
I guess my mental timeline was a little off of reality. Something I would never admit to my husband though!

Planting The Stencil Seed
Because most of the time, Kevin needs a little persuasion and time to digest my “ideas”!
The room needed painting anyway so we went looking for paint colors. While we were deciding on what color we wanted to paint the room I was able to talk Kevin into stenciling one of the walls.
Which at first, wasn’t a huge hit in his mind but he was a good sport about it and eventually gave in.
Looking back I guess I should have realized that this would have been more of a hassle than anything but hindsight it always there rearing it’s lovely “I told you so” head.

Finding The Paint Color And Stencil Accent Wall Color
Which ended up being the same color.
We chose a paint color that was quite similar to the one that was already in the room but slightly darker and more grayish-blue.
Our plan was that we would paint the stenciled wall all white. Then use the same color that was on all the other three walls for the stencil itself. With our painting color and plan in place, it was stencil time.
I went on a search for the stencil of my dreams. Since I figured that once we did one wall of stencil there was a high likelihood that Kevin would not want to recreate this project again.
I started my search for the perfect wall stencil at Michaels. Then moved onto Joann Fabrics. Finishing my search off finally at Hobby Lobby where I found a winner.
Hobby Lobby had a decent amount of wall stencils to choose from. I decided on a Moroccan style stencil that was quite large.
Ready To Start The Painting Process
Painting First and Stenciling Second. Another opportunity to practice my patience!
Three blueish-gray walls and one white wall later it was time to stencil. This started the wheel’s in Kevin’s mind on how we were going to accomplish this.
Especially so that we could move along while certain areas were drying and still complete the project in a decent amount of time, aka one day!
Kevin’s methodical manner meant there were measurements and penciled grids all over the wall. Which actually worked out quite well in the end.

Stencil Accent Wall Time At Last
Which was a little more time consuming than how I pictured the process in my mind!
Once the grid was ready we collected all of our stenciling supplies and got to work.
Our Stenciling Supplies
Paint
We used a darker blueish/gray
color for the stenciling.
Wall Stencil
We chose a Moroccan wall stencil
that came from Hobby Lobby.
Spray Adhesive
We used this to keep the stencil in place
on the wall while we moved it along the grid.
Small Paint Roller
We used a craft stencil roller but any
small roller would work just fine.
We started out making good progress working through the grid. Though at some point the stencil became so gummed up from the spray adhesive that we couldn’t continue.
So off to Hobby Lobby we went with fingers crossed that they had the stencil we needed in stock. Low and behold they had one left. We bought the stencil and headed home to finish our wall.
I will say it actually worked out well because while we were gone the sections we had already stenciled had time to dry which made it easier to finish.
Completed Stencil Accent Wall Project
No More Spray, Stick, Paint, Repeat.
The accent wall turned out better than we expected, especially in Kevin’s mind. Because let’s be honest I knew it was going to look great all along! It was definitely a little more tedious than I imagined it to be but I really liked the end result.
Though I think I will have to enjoy my pictures of our old stencil wall for now. I will say that Kevin never really minds painting my striped walls but I think that after this stencil project he won’t be too quick to agree to do a stenciled accent wall any time soon.
